Justin was in NICU for 3 weeks, he was born with a fractured skull, and he wasn’t responding. 7 hours after birth his brain started to seize. I watched my little guy suffer and I couldn’t do anything about it. All I could do is pray. Little Justin is a fighter. In addition to CP, he’s been diagnosed with Lennox Syndrome seizure disorder. He takes daily medications. He isn’t able to swallow thin liquids, he’s on a purée diet and he also has a G-tube. He’s in therapy five days a week, PT, OT and SP. He also gets 6 weeks of intensive therapy, 3 weeks during winter break and 3 weeks in summer break. The Dr thought that Justin would be a baby with no function but he has proven them wrong. Justin is able to sit up and walk with support. He has a contagious smile that no one can ever take that away from him. My son is my hero; I’m so blessed to have him.

I would like to nominate my 23 year old son, Derek. He has spastic quad CP and has caught up to his age, but has physical limitations. He has had many surgeries and just had one in May that will lay him up for 10 weeks. But despite everything, he always has a smile and great outlook. He is in college right now to become a math/science teacher for a middle school. He is very courageous to face whatever comes his way. He is also a twin, but his twin has the same CP and much more severe. I just wanted to nominate him for how far he has come and how much farther we know he’ll go.
I would like to nominate my son Anam to be Hero of the day. He was born at 27 weeks, weighing about 2 pounds. He was diagnosed with CP at 7 months due to the umbilical cord that was tied around his neck and his brain lacked oxygen and the left hand side was damaged. He can’t talk or walk but has the most contagious laughter ever and adorable smile. He’s my gift from God, I love him sooo much.

I would like to nominate my daughter, Rain Chanel, for Hero of the day. She was born 05/05/05. She was born with craniosynostosis due to not moving in the womb so her pallets fused together. She died twice after birth and was in the NICU for 3 weeks (pretty remarkable). She was not diagnosed with CP until about 15 months old. They don’t know what caused her to have CP. They kind of threw their hands up and said “We’ll call it Cerebral Palsy.” She’s legally blind and “deaf”, has NO form of communication, tube fed, walks a little with a walker, chews her hands like chew toys and beats her head every chance she gets. However, she’s an absolute Angel and loves to cuddle, play, laugh, and beat on everything like drums. If the music is loud enough she hears it and that’s her favorite. She smiles like the sun and has eyes as big and deep blue as the ocean. She changed and saved my life from her physically abusive father. She truly is my hero!
