“Achieving Wheelchair Equality” (AWE)
Achieving Wheelchair Equality (AWE) was founded in 1991 to help wheelchair users and others with mobility problems overcome the unique obstacles they face with employment, community, family, and recreation. Our members are involved with volunteer efforts throughout the lowcountry to meet that goal. AWE encourages community involvement at all levels. But we are not known as an "All work and no play" type of organization. We sponsor several lowcountry athletes in sports such as wheelchair racing and weightlifting, and we sponsor the North Charleston Hurricanes, our local Wheelchair Basketball team. We added "Lowcountry Wheelchair Sports" to our name to reflect the demand and emphasis for recreational activities for those with disabilities. AWE helps educate individuals of their legal rights and of laws that affect their lives. AWE helps people with disabilities become informed leaders in their communities and learn to speak up for change.
