Disabled Resource Services empowers individuals with disabilities to achieve their maximum level of independence through services supporting advocacy, awareness and access to their community. Disabled Resource Servies (DRS) is an Independent Living Center that serves Larimer and Jackson Counties.

Most of the people served have very low incomes (97% earn less than $9,000 annually) plus permanent, disabling conditions that are severe. As a result, they struggle to manage their daily activities, as well as coping with difficult, disability related circumstances. Individuals needing help can have any kind of disability, including physical, psychological, developmental, etc. They may be any age, although most are adults (68% are 20-59 years of age). Eighteen percent are minorities. More than 31,000 residents in our catchment area live with one or more disabling conditions.

Services provided by Disabled Resource Services

(Access to Independence) The Vision After 55 Program provides independent living skills training such as through performing home safety assessments, assistive technology training, budget counseling, and more for those with vision loss and blindness. Peer support is provided by staff members who have disabilities as well. Fifty-one percent of our agency’s staff and Board members have disabilities. Peer support is beneficial because it helps clients and case managers build stronger bonds and allows case managers to be positive role models to clients.
Employment assistance provides job counseling and work search assistance.
Social Security Assistance: one staff person specializes in helping clients with the Social Security process.
Nursing Home Transitions: we have a program to help individuals transition out of nursing homes and back into the community if appropriate for them.
The Volunteer Coordinator provides assistance for occasional yard work, household chores, etc. for clients with open case files Case managers provide extensive advocacy and information and referral services Limited financial assistance is available to current clients with open cases for emergency needs such as rental evictions, utility shutoffs, medications, transportation, etc.

The assistance is based on the availability of funds. Our Equipment Loan Closet has durable medical items that can be rented at a very reasonable price (for example a wheelchair is $30 for up to 12 months) Section 8 Voucher Program: we manage a small Section 8 Housing Voucher program (for more information see the Section 8 Wait List page).
Home Accessibility: we can help find resources in the community to enhance home accessibility.
Higher Level Advocacy: case managers provide advocacy to assist clients in lobbying for systemic change.
