The George Crothers Memorial School at CADES is a place where children challenged by disability have a chance to shine. We are a licensed special education school serving children with intellectual and physical disabilities from mild to medically fragile, ages 3 to 21 years old. Our ungraded classes at the George Crothers Memorial School (GCMS) are small, with a low student-to-teacher ratio. We use research-based teaching strategies, multi-sensory approaches, and innovative assistive technology to identify and nurture the unique abilities of each child.

In addition to the standards-aligned educational core, students participate in a rich variety of activities that enrich the school experience and build relationships. Art, music, adapted physical education, gardening & community trips help to expand the mind and exercise the bodies of our students. Visitors and volunteers also help to ground our students in the life of the community.

At GCMS, our dedicated occupational, physical, speech and vision therapists work closely with our experienced special education teachers to maximize each student’s independence. Augmentative communication, assistive technology, and powered mobility are explored as motivating choices for appropriate students. Our on-site professional nursing staff is available at all times throughout the day to provide medication, specialized treatment, and coordination with families. The health and safety of our students is a top priority for CADES.
