Great Strides began as a non-profit organization in 1999, arising from Terry Lewis’ desire to fill a gap in community based mental health services; especially for those who had not found success in traditional treatment settings. Initially focusing on psychotherapy and equine-facilitated learning services for individuals and groups, our services grew to include workshops, continuing education programs for mental health professionals, riding instruction and more.

With over 25 years of experience as a therapist and horsewoman, Terry is the creative force behind Great Strides. While receiving her Masters in Social Work from New York University, she trained at New York Hospital Cornell and later worked at Yale Psychiatric Institute, specializing in treatment resistant adolescents. Terry provided outpatient mental health services prior to relocating to Maryland, where she was the Child and Adolescent Program Manager for Prince George’s County’s Core Services Agency.
