Hearts Aligned is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 2021. Their mission is to provide families with a critically ill child, living in Santa Barbara County, with financial assistance, family support, and advocacy.

Hearts Aligned was founded to fill the gap in essential services designed to strengthen families who have a child with a critical illness other than cancer (since there is another local organization that only serves children with cancer). Their ultimate vision is for every family with a critically ill child to become part of a supportive and caring community. Their goal is to provide support, connections, empowerment, and peace of mind for families with a critically ill child as they struggle through this life-changing situation.

Through partnerships with medical facilities, Hearts Aligned acts as a single point of contact to provide financial assistance, family support, and advocacy to low-income families with a critically ill child.

• Financial Assistance: Low-income families who have a child with a critical illness are eligible for consideration. They are provided direct financial assistance up to $2,500 for bills that are paid directly to the service provider. Services include and are not limited to rental assistance, utilities, car payments, car insurance, lodging assistance, and other essentials.
• Family Support: The Hearts Aligned family support program assists families by securing items such as gas and grocery cards for upcoming medical appointments or emergency trips to the hospital. They also secure items such as diapers, infant and baby supplies, wipes, food vouchers, clothing, and other household goods. In cases where the family does not have means to pick up the items themselves, Hearts Aligned staff delivers them. Through a network of local non-profit organizations, they provide additional resources, such as mental health, parent support, and longer term financial assistance that may be outside their scope to support these families.
• Advocacy: Hearts Aligned works with families alongside their social workers, to assist them in understanding their child’s medical diagnosis, medical coverage, and medical bills. They bridge the gap between the healthcare providers by following-up with the family at home to ensure they understand discharge instructions to care for their child.
