The Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute is dedicated to providing opportunities for a rewarding future to individuals with developmental disabilities. We offer programs for adults and children, as well as support for their families and caretakers.

 

Services and Programs

 

The Kennedy School works with children and teens with disabilities offering personalized academic, therapeutic and vocational classes for students ages 6 to 22.

 

Services Include:

 

  • Individualized Instruction: Small classroom size, low student-teacher ratio, differentiated instruction
  • Therapeutic Support: Social, Emotional, Speech and Language, Occupational and Physical Therapy
  • Transition Services: Job Club, internships, competitive employment, travel training, community involvement
  • Inclusion Programs: Our inclusion programs provide educational and therapeutic supports to our students in a general education setting.  Current Inclusion Programs operate at St. Ann's Academy (K-8th grade) and Dunbar Senior High School (9th-12th grade).

Community Companions – an after-school program that continues the learning after the school day ends. Programs Include:

 

After School Program:  From school dismissal to 6 pm, students ages six to 21 engage in social, therapeutic and recreational activities such as arts and crafts, music, computers and outdoor games. Program vans take students on field trips, and a snack is provided. Autism Waiver funding, Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration funding and private payment are accepted.

 

In-Home Support: We offer one-on-one support for students in their home. Staff work with parents to ensure activities complement the student's ISP while meeting important needs. Autism Waiver funding and Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration funding are accepted. At this time, private payment is not accepted.

 

Take-A-Break Program: Allowing caregivers a few hours of respite, this program engages students in age-appropriate activities on Saturday afternoons. Activities include bowling, cooking, swimming and theater trips. The program operates from September to June.

 

Respite Camps: Respite Camps operate on days when Montgomery County schools are closed, including winter and spring breaks, from 8 am to 6 pm. Each camp session is customized to meet the needs of participants. Daily and weekly rates are available. Autism Waiver funding, Maryland Developmental Disabilities funding and private payment are accepted.

 

Summer Camps:  Following Montgomery County Public School ESY summer schedule, our summer camps include trips to museums and parks, outdoor games, musical shows and much more! Autism Waiver funding, Maryland Developmental Disabilities funding and private payment are accepted.

Community Options – This is an adult day program for individuals living with multiple and severe disabilities or health issues that prevent them from working regular jobs. At Community Options, we provide therapeutic services to help nurture growth and development. This includes taking trips into the community for activities including bowling, walks in the park and dining at restaurants.

Employment Programs – We provide support and guidance for young adults and adults with developmental disabilities who have little to no work history entering the workforce. Through adaptive programing, a dedicated staff, open partnerships with businesses, families and community members, we find new opportunities for our consumers to grow, share and develop as independent adults. We also work closely with families with teenage children, helping consumers access career-track training and employment in high-growth fields.

Community Living – is an independent living program where consumers live on their own and with the support of staff available on-call 24 hours a day. While living in their families' homes, their own homes or alternative housing units including several group homes operated by Catholic Charities' Kennedy Institute, consumers receive supports including:

  • life skills development
  • assistance in daily living activities
  • transportation assistance
  • maintaining and building relationships
  • participation in a faith community of their choice
  • self-advocacy
  • self-determination
  • recreational activities such as trips to the park, library, bowling, etc.
  • adult education courses

The Child Development Center – is open to typically developing children and children with disabilities ages six weeks to three years. The program focuses on early intervention and development in an inclusive and educational environment.

Early Head Start Program – is a program offering early child education care to infants and toddlers up to the age of three who are at all stages of cognitive development—including typical development and children displaying signs of developmental disability.
