The Lower Kuskokwim School District Special Education Department presents a unique experience for adventurous individuals working in remote Native Alaskan villages.   The Lower Kuskokwim School District has the largest school population in Bush Alaska. The twenty-two village sites are spread over a large geographic area and are accessible only by small aircraft, boat, and/or snow machine.

The LKSD Special Education program is comprised of many professionals and paraprofessionals serving a diverse population of students with special needs. Special education teachers are assigned to 20 village sites, and two village sites are being served by a District Office Itinerant Special Education Teacher. 

A team of District Office special services personnel provide support to the special and regular education staff at village sites. District Office special education personnel include the Special Education Director, School Psychologists, Speech/Language Pathologists, Multiple Disability Specialists, Grant Coordinator, Preschool Specialist, Itinerant Special Education Teacher, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Specialist. The Special Education Service Agency (SESA) in Anchorage provides the services of a Visual Impairment Specialist.
