MITS Michigan’s Integrated Technology Supports
MITS is a statewide project focused on:
- Assistive technology
- The instructional framework of UDL
- Accessible instructional materials
MITS provides support materials, technical assistance, training and an extensive lending library focused on improving outcomes for all students. MITS provides information about state-of-the-art technology, daily living devices, equipment, and the identification of assistive technology solutions for children with disabilities. MITS also maintains a collection of catalogs, reprints, and publications to assist assistive technology personnel in the schools. Assistive technology vendor and disability related resources are listed on this Web site under Links.
MITS provides in-services, workshops, seminars, and training opportunities for education and other professionals. Check their Web site for current listings of opportunities.
The MITS Lending Library contains assistive technology equipment and software that is available to Michigan’s PK-12 Public Schools for short-term (8 weeks) use. It affords districts the opportunity to try assistive technology with students to assess effectiveness prior to purchase.
It is important to remember that the first step toward effective implementation of assistive technology is a thorough assessment comprised of a multidisciplinary team including the student and parents that focus first on student’s needs and the tasks they are required to achieve vs. the tools that are available.
