What began as a state grant to serve 20 children and families has currently grown to 240 children. There are 20 children in each of the Head Start classrooms, located in six elementary schools. To be eligible for Head Start services, a child must be three or four by September 1, be from low-income family (meeting federal income guidelines), and, depending on the need of the child/family, benefit from the services that Head Start is able to provide. Generally, qualifying children live close to the school site they attend, ensuring a successful transition into kindergarten at the same location. Each classroom has a minimum of two children who benefit from services provided by Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education.
