Special Education Department
Benton Harbor Area Schools provides a range of services for students who qualify to receive special education support. We offer pre-kindergarten programs for children with developmental delays. Elementary and secondary students receive academic services in either a self-contained classroom, a resource room, or in general education classrooms, according to their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Additional services include speech therapy and school social work services. Berrien Regional Education Service Agency provides staff for our students who require physical therapy, occupational therapy or orientation & mobility services.
Early Childhood Department
The Early Childhood Department provides services related to children aged birth to age five. The department includes a supervisor, parent education coordinator, secretary and approximately 12 contracted staff.
The Parents as Teachers (PAT) home visiting program is an international early childhood parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child reaches thirty-six months. The program is designed to enhance child development and school achievement through parent education accessible to all families. It is a universal access model. Parent Educators also use the Born to Learn Curriculum. Vision, hearing, and developmental screening is done periodically.
