The mission of the Special Olympics Maine is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage , experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Special Olympics Maine is currently divided into twelve Area Programs, by county or counties, all of which provide area level training and competitive opportunities to Special Olympics Athletes.

Seasonal Programs:
Summer Sports Programs: Aquatics, Athletics, Bowling, Golf, Bocce and Tennis
Winter Sports Programs: Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Dual Skiing, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Snowshoeing, Basketball
Fall Programs: Football (Soccer, Equestrian
Unified Sports: Golf, Bowling, Sailing, Bocce, Tennis, Basketball
