The ARC has been a leader in advocating for the rights of all people with developmental disabilities to receive community based vocational and residential services, to receive assistance in acquiring respite and flexible funding for natural families, and many other initiatives that enhance and strengthen community and family relationships. The present and future goals of the ARC are to ensure meaningful participation in the development, implementation and governance of programs whose exclusive purpose is to provide support for people with developmental disabilities and their families to live and participate within their communities; to provide opportunities to people with disabilities and their families to articulate their vision of support to policy makers and others within their communities; to advocate for people with disabilities and their families to direct their own services and supports; to have choices in where they live, work, and spend time within their communities; and to assist people with developmental disabilities and their families to actively participate in the education of community members about the joys and the hardships that accompany the special needs of individuals and their families.
