The Institute for Disability Studies is all about people. For over 30 years, IDS has worked to provide technical assistance, training, resources and supports for Mississippians with disabilities and their families  IDS is Mississippi's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) Research, Education, and Service. Our work is about education, assistive technology, housing, emergency preparedness, health, communities, leadership, policies and much more.   The mission of IDS is to positively affect the lives of Mississippi citizens with developmental and other disabilities and their families across the life span and to work toward increasing their independence, productivity, and integration into their communities

Through a recent grant from the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast now offers the only special-needs service of its kind in the southeastern region of the United States. Toy Library and Technology Learning Center houses a set of specially adapted golf clubs and a special golf cart – the "Model Tee." This equipment can be found at the Trademark Golf Course in Gulfport or call Robbie at TLC for more information. Equipment includes: Adapted Tennis Equipment, Beach Wheelchairs and Adapted Golf Equipment.

These devices help those who are unable to use voice to communicate.  They can be programmed to play recorded phrases when used with the Boardmaker computer program.  The picture icons were created using Boardmaker software.  TLC staff can teach you to use Boardmaker.
