United Way of Mat-Su Borough – Wasilla ALASKA
United Way of Mat-Su originally grew out of the concerns of many community residents and leaders to find an effective way to meet the Borough needs in providing health, welfare, and other services to the community. UWMSB incorporated on December 28, 1987, formally elected directors and officers and adopted bylaws during February and March 1988. It is an autonomous and independent agency.
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is a cohesive community whose residents have the tools necessary for living happy, healthy and productive lives.
Early Childhood Partnership of Mat-Su:
The Early Childhood Partnership of Mat-Su is a Best Beginnings group focused on serving young children and their families. The partnership has been in existence since 2009 and developed a community-wide strategic plan to mobilize people and resources to ensure all children in the Mat-Su begin school ready to succeed.
Readers, Tutors, Mentors:
Research proves that caring volunteers working with students of all ages have the power to help kids boost academic achievement and put young people on track for a bright future. Find out how you can get involved by helping kids read, tutoring students, or mentoring.
Dolly Parton has partnered with Penguin publishing company to offer low cost, carefully selected titles that are development appropriate for children ages’ birth to 5 years. These books are mailed each month to the child's home absolutely free. Volunteers organize community sign-up events, coordinate with local agencies, and raise funds to sponsor children in the program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska strengthens our communities by providing mentors to all children who need and want a caring adult role model – special friends who can help them expand their horizons, realize their potential and enrich their futures – changing their lives.
CHOICES is an interactive decision-making workshop that empowers teens to achieve academic success in pursuit of their career and life aspirations. In two hour-long sessions, business and community volunteers take students through real-world exercises on academic self-discipline, time and money management, and goal setting.
