United Way of Southeast Mississippi
United Way of Southeast Mississippi is a local non-profit organization that strives to make a positive impact in Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties. By providing funds to partnering agencies and operating its own programs, United Way addresses community issues in four impact areas: education, financial stability, health, and support services.
United Way enables children and youth to learn, grow and reach their full potential. Education receives 30% of our overall community investment.
Community Partners impacting this area include:
Aldersgate Mission – Aldersgate is improving reading levels of children through after-school and summer programs.
Children Center for Communication and Development – The Children’s Center at Southern Miss provides early childhood education and family support for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers who have communication and developmental disabilities. The Children’s Center provides speech and language therapy, special education, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, behavior management, auditory-verbal therapy and parent education for infants, toddlers and preschoolers with disabilities. The Center also offers outreach and technical assistance to public school early intervention programs in service development, assessments and intervention design. A resource loan library is maintained for families of children with disabilities who require adaptive toys, specialized equipment and educational information. If there is a concern about a child's hearing, speech, vision, development, behavior, physical movement or there is a known medical diagnosis that affects a child's learning, parents or professionals should call the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency. A referral for assistance or information can be made by calling our offices. The Children's Center for Communication and Development provides an interdisciplinary team approach to the assessment and treatment of communicatively- and developmentally-delayed children [birth – 5 years]. Services are either home-based or center-based, depending on a child's needs. For more information, please visit http://www.unitedwaysems.org/about/what-we-do/education/childrens-center-for-communication-and-development.
